Google Launches Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) for AI-Driven Purchases
Google has unveiled the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), a new open standard designed for purchases made by AI agents, with support from over 60 merchants and financial institutions including Mastercard, American Express, and PayPal. AP2 ensures interoperability across AI platforms, vendors, and payment systems, while keeping every transaction traceable through an auditable trail. The protocol requires an “intent mandate” (searching for items) and a “cart mandate” (final approval), balancing automation with user oversight. Google also partnered with Coinbase, Metamask, and Ethereum Foundation to integrate crypto transactions. With backing from leading players, AP2 sets the stage for a future where AI agents handle real-time, complex shopping on behalf of users.
